When the DOOM online community started to really boom, along came Skulltag, a multiplayer source port by Brad "Carnevil" Carney. This helped the DOOM online communtiy expand greatly because it not only interested people more, but the new weapons, monsters and gameplay types that we were presented with just increased our interest enormously!
Now this is where the WADs' mesh with Skulltag. When you download a WAD, you can click and drag it into the skulltag.exe icon. This will allow you to play the WAD easily...as long as you've got an IWAD obviosly. (IWAD's are the raw data needed to play the game; such as DOOM 2, Heretic, or Hexen)
Another details that makes skulltag so great is that it improves the "old" DOOM a lot. The graphics and details of objects are better, you can add a crosshair if you want, you can crouch, you can use the mouse to look up and down and, possibly best of all, you can JUMP!
The Official Skulltag Website is: http://skulltag.com/
From there you can get a load of new information. Be sure to check it out, if you haven't yet.
- There are many different game modes, as I've said before. I'm not going to write them all out now. But if you'd like to see more about them go to the skulltag wiki and see the game modes section. The link is right here: http://skulltag.com/wiki/Game_Modes
- The new weapons and information about them can be found here: http://skulltag.com/wiki/Weapons If you thought a BFG-9000 was a great weapon, wait till you see the BFG-10000. Just please be careful: this BFG does insane amounts of damage to the player!
- The new abominations of Skulltag can make the gameplay a great challenge. The link here: http://skulltag.com/wiki/Monsters will show you the beasts you can find. And, yes! It does include a Cacolantern!
- Possibly my favorite part of the Skulltag online gameplay: Medals! There are different medals for different things that you do. The medals, and all the information that you need about them is found here: http://skulltag.com/wiki/Medals
Well, now that I've given you guys some insight about the DOOM game and Skulltag, I guess I can start to do what this whole blog's about: reviewing the WAD's. Hopefully these other posts that I have written about DOOM will help your understanding of my reviews as I will probably mention names of monsters and weapons at various times.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that Skulltag also brings in a whole lot of bots so that you can play the different game modes without other players. This cute little Valentines day photo that the Skulltag team made shows almost all the bots. Including Daisy (the bunny) and Hissy (The baby Cacodemon). And the medal system also works with bots, mind you.
There is also Zdaemon and Odamex. if you download all three of them and then get IDE(Internet Doom Explorer), you can browse through all three of them at once.
